Municipal Election update
By Bob Blubaugh
The Westminster mayor resoundingly won reelection and New Windsor will be getting a new mayor after those two municipalities and Hampstead all held elections on Tuesday, May 13.
Westminster
Incumbent Mayor Mona Becker won with nearly 80 percent of the vote on Tuesday. Becker received 678 votes to win a second term over challenger Nicholas Thomas, who picked up 143 votes, according to the city's Facebook page.
Becker, first elected to the office in 2021, joins Kevin Utz, who was elected in 2009 and 2013, as the only Westminster mayors to be elected twice since Leroy Conaway served from 1973-89.
Additionally, incumbents Tony Chiavacci and Dan Hoff were reelected as members of the Westminster Common Council. Chiavacci received 702 votes and Hoff 665 to secure the two seats that were up for election. They were running unopposed.
Chiavacci secured his fifth four-year term on the council. Hoff will be starting his second.
New Windsor
Kevin Cornick, who had served on the New Windsor Town Council the past four years, was elected mayor with more than two-thirds of the vote on Tuesday.
Cornick earned 182 votes while challenger Ashley Collier picked up 77, according to the town's Facebook page.
Cornick will take over for Neal Roop, who opted not to run again after serving as mayor from 2009 to 2021 and again from 2021 to present.
Two Town Council seats were available this election cycle. Newcomer Dante Howard was on the ballot and earned one of them. The other seats will be appointed by the town.
According to Town Clerk/Treasurer Dana Mangus, 259 out of the town's 1,313 registered voters cast ballots Tuesday, for a turnout of 19.7 percent.
Hampstead
Three incumbent Town Council members were running unopposed for reelection in Hampstead on Tuesday, prompting only 50 residents to vote.
Council Vice President Wayne H. Thomas earned 47 votes, Diane L. Barrett had 44 votes and Benjamin Zolman got 41. While Zolman and Barrett both earned a second consecutive term, Thomas has been on the Town Council since 1993.
Hampstead has 4,487 registered voters according to Human Resources Coordinator Judy Rang.
