Top 5 Things to Do This Weekend

January 27th - 30th

This weekend, be sure to check out some of these fun events! (Or catch them before they're gone!) The FLICC Documentary series continues this week with "Muscle Shoals", a dissection of a small town's musical influence, at the Carroll Arts Center on Friday and then on Saturday the Bright Star Traveling Theater presents: "Freedom Songs". Head over to Carroll County Ag Center to cheer on your favorites at the McDonogh Duals Wrestling tournament! Over at McDaniel College and the Arts Center don't miss the Icons of American Animation Exhibit, and the Whimsy Exhibit for fun displays of your favorite fictional characters. Bingo Thursdays are back again in Mt. Airy at the American Legion - Gold Star Post 191, so don't miss your chance to win some great prizes! And coming to cable channel HD-1086 in February, the CMC will broadcast special local programming to celebrate Black History Month!

1. Muscle Shoals

Friday, January 28th, 7:30pm

If you're interested in music and conversations, Muscle Shoals is for you. Taking you on a trip along the Tennessee River in Alabama, small town Muscle Shoals produces outstanding music, by outstanding artists- like Mick Jagger, Alicia Keys, and Etta James, consistently. 2. McDonogh Duals Wrestling

Friday, January 28th, 7:30pm

Additional Dates Include: 1/30 at 6am-6pm

Get ready to wrestle! Kids and adults are welcome to this weekend of wrestling duals. The duals weigh-in will be used for open tournaments, and all participants are required to complete the online waiver. This event was organized by Tyrant Wrestling, and for more information email them at director@mcdonoghduals.com.

3. Freedom Songs

Saturday, January 29th, 2:00 pm

This performance has been scheduled in place of “Struggle for Freedom,” the canceled MLK Day program. All “Struggle for Freedom” tickets will be honored for this performance.

Bright Star Touring Theatre presents Freedom Songs, in lieu of their cancelled MLK Day Program. This conglomerate of events highlights influential moments in Black History using song. Like the songs which carried secret messages on the Underground Railroad, to the powerful anthems of the Civil Rights Movement, to the Beale Street Blues, the actors and singers of Bright Star break down their history. Tickets are $8-12.

4. Icons of American Animation Exhibit

Saturday, January 29th, 12:00 – 1:00pm

Additional Dates Include: 1/3-3/12

Don't forget about The Icon of American Animation Exhibit happening this month! If you missed it, this weekend is a great chance to see some cornerstones of the animation world live and in-person. Famous characters like the Seven Dwarves, the Rugrats, the Super Friends and more will be on display. Over 150 pieces of original animation art work are for view; featuring the original concept drawings, paintings, cells, storyboards, and music sheets. The exhibit also highlights animation’s cultural impact, artistic relevance, technological achievements, and historical moments in time. It is free and open to the public during normal business hours.

5. Whimsy

Saturday, January 29th, 10:00 – 11:00am

Additional Dates Include: Now- 2/28

Along with the Icons of American Animation exhibit, Whimsy brings you some of your favorite characters. This is a call-for-artists exhibit featuring work created by local artists on a variety of mediums. Visit Whismy to meet with characters from the worlds of Disney, anime, and more. Gallery exhibits are free and open to the public during normal business hours. 6. Bingo-American Legion Gold Star Post 191

Thursday, January 27, 7:00 – 9:00pm

Additional Dates Include: Every Thursday unless otherwise noted

If you're 21 or older, head over to the Mt. Airy American Legion Gold Star Post 191 for their weekly bingo! The doors open at 5pm, Early Bird Bingo starts at 6:45pm, and regular games begin at 7pm. New changes to Bingo include some new prizes, lower prices, and more ways to win! 6. Black History Month Special Programming 

Coming in February...

Throughout the month of February the Community Media Center (CMC) will highlight the heritage and achievements of Carroll County's African-American community by featuring a variety of locally produced programming. Tune in to Cable Channel HD-1086 or channel 19. Each week we'll feature locally produced documentaries, personal interviews and area event coverage that helps document, commemorate and celebrate our African American community. Documentaries and interviews featured are part of the Carroll County History Project
