Real Talk

The Community Media Center has partnered with Carroll County State’s Attorney’s Office to produce a pilot series: "Real Talk." The program is designed to shed light on substance use disorders, remove the stigma about the disease and provide information and resources for those in crisis, seeking treatment or in recovery.

Hosted by Tim Weber, Community Education Liaison with the Office of the State’s Attorney in Carroll County. Real talk examines the various stages of substance use through candid interviews with real people in our community. The program features people in recovery, family members of those who suffer from a substance use disorder, counselors in treatment centers, ocal experts working toward prevention and law enforcement officers working on the front lines helping to save lives.

Real Talk airs on cable channel HD-1086.  Visit our program schedule for air dates and times or watch individual segments below.

Previous episodes

 Real Talk: Crisis (Episode 1)

Substance use can lead to addiction, which becomes a life-or-death situation. That crisis point can come when people realize they have a problem and need help. Or, unfortunately, after incarceration or an overdose. Join Real Talk host Tim Weber, Community Education Liaison with the Office of the State’s Attorney in Carroll County as he talks with a local a mother who lost her son. Hear her story about what led up to her son's overdose, a person in recovery reveals the depths of her addiction. Also in this episode, you’ll meet a peer recovery coach who’ll discuss her journey from addiction to her current role. And a Sheriff’s Office deputy who will assure you that the police are a lifesaving resource.

Real Talk: Intervention (Episode 2 )

Action must be taken before someone addicted to drugs can step onto the road to recovery. That’s the intervention stage and it's the focus of this episode of Real Talk. Hear what happens when someone with substance use disorder decides enough is enough. You’ll meet the mother of someone in recovery discussing the challenges. The Carroll County’s State’s Attorney tells you why prosecuting those addicted isn’t always the best path forward, and a person in recovery reveals when he knew he needed to get help or he would die. Plus, a Sheriff’s office corporal takes you through options for those at the Carroll County Detention Center who want to get clean.

Real Talk: Recovery (Episode 3 )

Recovery is a lifelong journey for those addicted to substances. It isn’t easy and setbacks are common. But recovery is possible. Today, you’ll meet a grieving mother detailing how she turned her personal tragedy into a mission to help others. And a drug and alcohol treatment provider discusses various treatment options. You’ll hear a woman who received a second chance explain how resolving her legal issues helped in her recovery. And a prosecutor tells you about a law enforcement assisted diversion program called L.E.A.D, The Early Intervention Program and Drug Treatment Court.

Real Talk: Prevention (Episode 4)

One of the best ways to fight addiction is to stop it before it starts.  In this episode of Real Talk we focus on prevention and what’s being done in our community to fight this terrible disease. Learn about the Carroll County Health Department’s prevention efforts, and what programs the Carroll County Public Schools have implemented to help. An Alcohol & Drug Abuse Prevention Specialist will tell us about harm reduction and how it can benefit our community and you’ll learn about Triangle Recovery Club and how its work helps those in recovery, stay clean & sober.

Real Talk: Consequences (Episode 5)

The effects of substance use disorders are far reaching and the consequences can impact many areas of a person’s life.  In this episode of Real Talk a circuit court judge tells us about some of the legal consequences of substance use, a physician with the Carroll County Health Department will share how addiction can cause a host of long-term conditions. A person in recovery shares the financial impacts that substance use had on his life and we’ll hear how families and friends are impacted by the disease when a loved one dies as a result of addiction.
