Manchester Valley avenges lone loss by taking down Liberty

Carmaya Bowman and Taylor Leaman were determined to exact some revenge from their team's only loss of the girls basketball season to date, but when Manchester Valley trailed Liberty at halftime on Jan. 21 the Mavericks teammates were put to the test.

A huge third quarter from Leaman, and all-around solid efforts from the home team led to Man Valley's 44-34 victory that pushed the Mavs into first place in the Carroll County Athletic League standings.

Man Valley outscored Liberty 25-12 in the third quarter, and Leaman scored 13 points in the frame. She finished with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Bowman added 12 points, seven boards, three steals, and two assists.

The Mavericks improved to 12-1, 5-1 in Carroll County. Jenna Liska scored 10 points for Liberty (6-5, 2-3), while Jess Littlejohn and Maddi Haggerty added seven points apiece.

Girls Basketball

Westminster 40, South Carroll 32

Recap: Abby Kindle led the Owls (8-2, 4-1 county) with 15 points and four rebounds. Kylie McWilliams' 10 rebounds helped Westminster to a fourth straight victory. Shannon McTavish led South Carroll (3-9, 1-5) scoring with 16 points. 

Francis Scott Key 56, Winters Mill 26

Recap: The Eagles improved to 8-5 (2-3 CCAL) behind 14 rebounds and nine points from Ally Mathias in a balanced attack. Summer Brooks added six points, five assists, and four steals, and Rayna Miller and Wilcoria Taku scored nine each for FSK. Drew Watkins went for eight points and four rebounds. WM is 1-7, 0-4.

Boys Basketball

Liberty 66, Man Valley 58

Recap: The Lions (10-3, 5-2) pulled away late for a Carroll County Athletic League victory. Tyler Downs led the way with 24 points and Shane Stewart had 13. Xavier Grogg scored 13 for the Mavericks (3-10, 1-5). Cam Hodges grabbed 10 rebounds for the Lions.

South Carroll 56, Westminster 47

Recap: The Cavaliers (6-7, 4-3 county) used some timely 3-pointers in the third quarter to grab a win on their annual "Gold Rush" night. Owen Scott led SC with 14 points and Karson Pavlik scored 13. Everett Costley collected 10 points, seven rebounds, and three assists for the Owls (2-8, 0-5), and Patrick Haynes chipped in with nine points.
