From award winner John Foertschbeck
I was truly surprised and totally overwhelmed last night at the CMC's 17th annual Vollie Awards Ceremony when I received an award for "History Project Volunteer of the Year". I must admit that I never heard of the Vollie’s before this year. I was very impressed with the entire program and to receive an award for having fun doesn’t seem quite right. I am truly humbled with this great honor.

The real heroes in this award are my partners, Ann Horvath, Cindy Hirschberg, and Sally Adams. Ann, Cindy and Sally did all the hard work. They contacted individuals and scheduled most of the interviews I was privileged to record.

My awareness and involvement with the CMC began as I was researching my book, Woodbine on the B & O. I signed up for one of the certification classes because I enjoy video taping family and community events. Having access to professional equipment and especially professional, expert staff was a real bonus.

The history project is a natural follow-up to my interest in genealogy and local history. Working with Ann Horvath and her work with the Carroll County Genealogical Society was an added bonus and opportunity to further these interests. Cindy and Sally opened my eyes to the Carroll Lutheran Village and many of the wonderful people who live and work there.

Everyone I met and worked with at the CMC has been most supporting and cooperative. I've learned a lot and have much more to learn. I am looking forward to working with all of you on the history project as well as some community events, e.g., the Carroll County 4H Fair's Demolition Derby and Harrison Mule Days.

My sincere thanks to all of you!
Sincerely,
John

What a great Celebration of the achievements of Carrolls citizens who utilize the Community Media Centers terrific staff, equipment, ongoing specialized training, modern studio and facility. Citizens who over the last 2 years have made and contributed programs, short movies, covered events around the county and then broadcast them over our very own local television channels enlightening and entertaining all of us.

Viewing our community through our very own local media is something only a handful of communities get to enjoy. In Carroll County everyone who wants to produce a television program of their choice has the opportunity to do it. Can you imagine that? Who wold have ever thought I as a citizen could decide what I wanted to see on TV and be able to go 20 minutes down the road and have a bunch of friendly people right there with the sole purpose to help me do it? They are right there to teach me how to be a producer, camera person and editor AND then let me borrow a camera or book studio time and bring it all together, go home, invite all my friends over or tell them to tune in on their cable channel and watch my program? Is this a great country or what???? And are we a lucky community or what????

I just had a great time last night celebrating a lot of dedicated and talented members of our community and woke up this morning wanting to tell someone about that. So I find myself here in my dining room, still in my bathrobe, coffee brewing and I'm writing a blog that folks I may never meet in my lifetime are going to read as soon as I push a button. All because we are fortunate enough to have a multi faceted Community Media Center like ours available to us. Is this a great opportunity or what???
