In Memory of Dwight Dingle: 1946 - 2009
"The Voice of Carroll County"
The Community Media Center will always remember its good friend Dwight Dingle, a well-known personality with WTTR-1470 Radio in Westminster. Dwight passed away on Thanksgiving Day 2009 at the age of 63.
Carroll County benefitted from his time with us - not only as a broadcaster and station manager at WTTR, but also as a supporter of local sporting events and a community activist. Dwight's talent, infectious laugh and familiar nature earned him the moniker, "the Voice of Carroll County."
Dwight joined WTTR in 1974, by chance, while looking for a second job. He was employed as a teacher in Baltimore County but needed to supplement his family's income. According to his obituary, he took a part-time position as a sports broadcaster. In 1982, he went full-time as WTTR's morning host and station manager.
Under Dwight's leadership, WTTR won multiple awards and gained recognition for its coverage of local high school, college, youth and semi-pro sports. He developed and hosted the "Athlete of the Week" program which recognized outstanding local athletes.
In the community, Dwight was heavily involved with charitable organizations and events like "Carroll's Idol" and the Community Media Center's "President's Day Auction." His resonant voice and outgoing demeanor made him a popular master of ceremonies for local fundraising events.
Among his other accomplishments, Dwight was the first non-athlete to be inducted into the Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. His involvement with the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce resulted in the establishment of the "Teacher of the Year" award. On November 20, 2009, the Carroll County Commissioners honored him with "Dwight Dingle Day" for his years of service to the community.
Dwight was born November 21, 1946 in Waynesboro, PA. He was a 1968 alumnus of what is now Towson University. He returned to Towson to earn his master's degree.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sue Putnam Dingle, their son Ryan, three granddaughters and his mother, Betty Dingle.
Dwight Dingle was a remarkable human being who left a special mark on this community. His voice and spirit will be sorely missed.
