In Memory of Ira Zepp: 1929 - 2009

Oral History Collection Day Held at Carroll County Senior Centers
May12, 2009: In Observance of Older American's Month
On Tuesday, May 12 the Community Media Center collected 39 oral history interviews during "Oral History Collection Day," a special Carroll County History Project event held at area senior centers. The event took place in observance of Older Americans Month, in partnership with the Carroll County Bureau of Aging.

Between 8:30am and 4:30pm, interview stations were open at the Westminster, North Carroll and South Carroll Senior Centers. Cameras rolled as local seniors shared their memories of Carroll County.

A group of volunteers from T. Rowe Price were on hand at each senior center to perform the interviews and assist with videotaping as part of their annual "Day of Caring" program. Click here for photos from this event.

Interviews appeared in June on the History Project website (www.carrollhistory.org). All interviews aired on cable Channel 19 in Carroll County.

Mock Interviews for Career & Tech Students
On May 7, 2009 staff of the Community Media Center (CMC) and Board of Education as well as faculty from McDaniel College gave mock interviews to 16 video production students from the Carroll County Career & Technology Center (CTC). Instructor John Pellegrini devised the interviews to better prepare his graduating seniors for the job market.

Students were interviewed for a fictitious production assistant position at the CMC and actual internship positions. They were required to fill out applications and present their portfolios to their interviewers.

"My students got a lot out of the experience," said Pellegrini. "They were interviewed by people who are familiar with their field."

The CMC partnered with the CTC in the fall of 2008 to provide video production students with real world experience learning video production and editing. Students spend a portion of their class time participating in productions for the CMC and class projects.

CMC Open House
April 18, 2009: The Community Media Center held an Open House in celebration of its fifth year of service to Carroll County on Saturday, April 18, 2009 from 10 to 2 pm. The public access facility has continually provided non-commercial public, education and governmental television programming and television production training to county residents since it officially opened in April 2004.

The public was invited to tour the facility and learn about the CMC's television training programs, internships and volunteer opportunities. The event was free and open to the public.

Youth Programming by Career and Tech Students Featured on Channel 19
January 28, 2009: Since the beginning of the school year, students from Carroll County Career and Technology Center's Video Production Program have been partnering with the CMC crewing productions as part of their career preparation.

The students helped produce live broadcasts of the Humane Society's Critter Chatter series and lent a hand in other productions including the CMC's 10th Annual Holiday Open House and programs for the Board of Education. They have also received training on gathering oral histories for the Carroll County History Project.

Production is now underway for Carroll Youth TV; a regular program coordinated by teacher John Pellegrini. The program will consist of various student-produced story segments covering subjects like music, movies, sports, fashion, current events and other youth-related issues. Josh Rudy and Buddy Bullard will be the Senior Student Producers now that they have become interns at the CMC. More information about Carroll Youth TV will be coming soon.

CMC Hosts Carroll County's Legacy Preview
January 7, 2009: Over 80 people packed the CMC Studio on January 7th to catch a preview of the new television documentary, Carroll County's Legacy, a one hour television program about Carroll County's history. Following the screening, guests had the opportunity to ask questions to the producer, Marilyn Maguire Phillips, an independent producer formerly with Maryland Public Television and a Carroll County resident.

The one hour program explores the county's rich heritage by examining its people, communities, agriculture, business and industry, religion, transportation and education. It includes oral histories from local residents and descriptions of significant historical sites throughout Carroll County.

Carroll County's Legacy is part of the Carroll County History Project, an initiative to capture the history of Carroll County and create a permanent archive of memories of life in the county from its residents. This is a partnered project with the Carroll County Public Library, NAACP, Human Relations Commission, Historical Society of Carroll County, and the Carroll County Genealogy Society.

The documentary will be re-aired on cable Channel 19 throughout the month of January. After that, it will be available to purchase for $30 from the Community Media Center or the Historical Society of Carroll County. More information is available at carrollhistory.org or by calling the CMC at 410-386-4415.
