Celebrating America is an initiative of the Carroll County Commissioners that is comprised of interested community partners committed to promoting a greater understanding of American history and historically significant people, events, and places, particularly those within Carroll County. This year, HSCC collaborates with the Carroll County Public Library, Union Mills Homestead, other local history-based groups, and the Commissioners to create this two-day event, called American Milestones: 1900-1919, Labor & Leisure.

On Friday, May 19, the weekend will begin with a luncheon (noon to 2 p.m.), featuring a keynote author. The location will be announced shortly. The fee for this event is $30 and includes lunch and a copy of the speaker’s book. For tickets, go to: library.carr.org/CALuncheon2017.

Saturday, May 20 features a free Celebrating America Festival & Open House (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) in and around Emerald Hill-City Hall, 1838 Emerald Hill Lane, Westminster. Reenactor David Schuey of History Teller Productions will reprise the role of General John “Black Jack” Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) on the Western Front in World War I, 1917-18. Pershing is the only American to be promoted in his own lifetime to General of the Armies, the highest possible rank in the US Army. At one p.m., storyteller Ellouise Schoettler, with discuss her book, Ready to Serve: Unknown Stories of 64 WWI Nurses from Maryland. This event will be held at John Street Quarters.

Other aspects of Saturday include: World War I activities and remembrances; patriotic music by middle school choruses; recognition of County winners of the National History Day contest; and an historical costume show. Among those organizations participating in the weekend are Carroll County Farm Museum, Carroll county Genealogical Society, Carroll County Public Library, Historical Society of Carroll County, New Windsor Heritage, Pipe Creek Civil War Roundtable, Taneytown Heritage & Museum Association, Union Mills Homestead, and Westminster Historic District Commission.
