The 8th annual Celtic Canter takes place in historic downtown Westminster, MD on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 9am with a picturesque start/finish. After the race enjoy a post-race party, awards ceremony and Irish celebration complete with pub crawl, live music, vendors, and activities for children.

Empty Bowls was created to bring awareness to hunger of all types, foster community, and raise funds to support those in need. “A simple meal of soup, bread and water, and a handcrafted bowl to take home as a reminder of those whose bowls remain empty.”
At Empty Bowls of Carroll County, you will experience a delicious sampling of soups provided and served by the area’s best restaurants. Ticket price includes soup, bread, water and a take-home, ceramic bowl. Bowls are provided by local schools, groups, and volunteers. Desserts and beverages will be available for an additional donation. Tickets will also be available at the door. Proceeds benefit The Shepherd’s Staff’s Emergency and Crisis Assistance Programs. In the case of event cancellation due to inclement weather, your ticket payment will be considered a donation.

McDaniel hosts a visiting artist lecture by sculptor and composer Ben Hall. A native of Detroit, Hall has presented at the Museum of Modern Art and Lincoln Center in New York City, INSTAL in Glasgow, Scotland, and the kunstenentrum BELGIE in Belgium. In addition to creating installations, he is a curator for Baptizum.com, the world’s largest online Black American spiritual collection, and also produces new American improvisational music on his record label brokenresearch, including the last small group recordings of visionary trumpeter and composer Bill Dixon. He received a bachelor’s degree from Bennington College and Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University.

McDaniel’s Global Initiatives hosts a screening of “Here and There” (“Aquí y Allá”). This 2012 drama is about a Mexican immigrant who returns home to a small mountain village in Guerrero, Mexico, after years of working in the United States and struggles to rebuild his family and follow his dreams of starting a band. In Spanish, with English subtitles. (2013, 110 minutes, not rated).
Join us for an author talk and panel discussion with three of this year’s Battle of the Books authors facilitated by Ted Zaleski. The panel will feature authors Beth Fantaskey, Ben Hatke, and Jordan Sonnenblick. A portion of this event was funded by a Choose Civility Grant.

This 2-hour tour explores little-known sites in historic Gettysburg: prisoner-of-war camps, an Army intelligence camp on the battlefield, and the Navy’s secret map-making service. Tour guides share stories of World War II leaders Churchill, Roosevelt, Eisenhower, de Gaulle, as well as the civilian experiences of war-time Gettysburg. The first Spring 2018 THMA general meeting will be Monday, March 26th at Grace United Church of Christ. Meeting begins with a short business meeting followed by the guest speaker. The March program features Albin Drzianowki, an instructor in the local blacksmith guild. He will bring tools he uses in his skill and show items he has crafted in his blacksmith shop. Following the program light refreshments will be served. Meetings are free and open to the public.

This annual event commemorates McDaniel College’s 150th anniversary with readings by McDaniel alumnae poets Karen Uschold Meadows and Melissa Atkinson Mercer. Meadows, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree from McDaniel in 1999, has her first published collection of poems, “Almond, Eyeless,” due out in Feb. 2018. Mercer received a bachelor’s degree from McDaniel in 2010 and is the author of the chapbooks “Storm Was her Voice” and “After the Miracle Season.”

March 28 – 31, 2018. The activity is an ‘I SPY’ game, where the participant is invited to enter each shop, spy the egg, and record it on a form which will be supplied by the business owner for a chance to win prizes.
Off Track Art is featuring new Associate Partner Bev Mey in a one woman show. Bev is a local artist who paints landscapes and still lifes in oil. Her show runs from March 1 through – April 29 with an opening reception March 10th from 4-6pm coordinating with Second Saturdays in downtown Westminster. Bev has been painting in oils for many years. Her work represents the beauty of nature.
On display March 29th-April 10th, 2018. A display of marshmallow masterpieces! Featuring more than 150 sculptures, dioramas, graphic arts, oversized characters and mosaics created and inspired by PEEPS®, this sweet event attracts thousands of visitors each year! In our 263-seat movie theatre you’ll also enjoy short Peep® videos and footage of PEEPS® being created in the Just Born Factory. PEEPS®-themed treats will be available at our concession stand and the lobby will be jam-packed with Peeps & Co.® merchandise.
Exhibit March 1 – 30, 2018. Opening Reception: Thursday, March 1, 5:30–7:30 pm, with a gallery talk at 6pm.
McDaniel College’s art and art history honors students show their work in a variety of media. Students featuring their works are seniors Caitlin Eversmier of Cockeysville, Md., Rachel Wojnar of Cumberland, Md., and junior Monique Staveley of Sykesville, Md.
Rice Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10am–4pm, and Saturday, noon–5pm.
