February 28 – March 3, 2018.  McDaniel’s Department of Theatre Arts presents a student-directed play festival featuring short plays directed by McDaniel seniors Bryan Bowen of North Beach, Md., and Brandon Richards of Huntingtown, Md. Bowen directs David Ives’s “Sure Thing,” “Variations on the Death of Trotsky,” “English Made Simple” and “The Other Woman.” Richards directs four short plays from the collection “Trepidation Nation,” including “Down to Sleep” by Victoria Stewart, “I Am Not Alone” by Richard Dresser, “Euxious” by Bridget Carpenter and “Yes” by Stephen Belber.

Carroll Community College Kicks off the Penguin Random House Book Fair with Melanie Benjamin

Spend the evening with The New York Times bestselling author of The Aviator’s Wife, The Swans of Fifth Avenue, The Autobiography of Mrs. Tom Thumb, and Alice I Have Been.

Tickets are $25 and include a copy of The Girls in the Picture, a $5 Penguin Random House Book Fair coupon, and access to the event reception.

Bestselling author Melanie Benjamin will talk about her latest book, The Girls in the Picture, which focuses on the friendship and creative partnership between two of Hollywood’s earliest female legends—screenwriter Frances Marion and superstar Mary Pickford. The author talk will begin at 7pm followed by a Q&A and book signing. Additional titles by Benjamin will be available for purchase before the event and during the book signing.

Ticket holders are invited to come early for hors d’oeuvres and refreshments starting at 6pm.

Each attendee will receive a special $5 off coupon to be used Friday or Saturday at the Penguin Random House Book Fair. Come at 6pm and shop in the Babylon Great Hall or use your coupon on Saturday! Attendees will receive coupon at event check in on 3/2.

The Ascension Country Breakfast is held on the first Saturday of every month. Come hungry, leave full. Called the best in Carroll County by many of our customers, a full all-you-can-eat breakfast menu including pancakes, Hahn sausage, scrambled eggs, hashed brown potatoes, egg and ham casserole, sausage gravy and biscuits, creamed chipped beef, assorted fruit, assorted pastries, fresh brewed coffee, hot tea, hot chocolate, milk, and juices all at an affordable price. Plenty of parking in the lot behind the church off Ralph St.

Chamber Music on the Hill, in residence at McDaniel College, showcases McDaniel College music faculty members performing a variety of musical styles and works, including solos, duets and ensembles.

Faculty include senior lecturers Linda Kirkpatrick on flute and David Kreider on piano, as well as adjunct faculty members David Duree on clarinet; Lynne Griffith on rench horn; pianist Don Horneff; percussionist Mark Lortz; oboist Melinda Niles; bassoonist Robert Sirois; drummer Jon Seligman; and bassist Alex Weber.

The Monday Night Music series presents adjunct faculty member Nick Reider on trumpet. Reider has been performing and teaching trumpet in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C., area for the past 17 years. He has been a featured soloist in the Westminster Symphony Orchestra and the Carroll County Jazz Ensemble, and has performed with Grammy Award winning artists The Isley Brothers and The B-52s.

Peter Mulvey has been a touring singer/songwriter for twenty years releasing well over a dozen records. In addition to playing shows from Anchorage to the Hague, from Santa Monica to Belfast. Peter Mulvey is an American folk singer-songwriter based in Milwaukee, WI. Since the early 1990s he has developed a strong national following in the indie folk/rock scene through his relentless touring and critically acclaimed albums.

Please join The Shepherd’s Staff for their 2nd Annual Empty Bowls fundraiser. Empty Bowls was created to bring awareness to hunger of all types, foster community, and raise funds to support those in need. “A simple meal of soup, bread and water, and a handcrafted bowl to take home as a reminder of those whose bowls remain empty.”

At Empty Bowls of Carroll County, you will experience a delicious sampling of soups provided and served by the area’s best restaurants. Ticket price includes soup, bread, water and a take-home, ceramic bowl. Bowls are provided by local schools, groups, and volunteers. Desserts and beverages will be available for an additional donation.  Tickets will also be available at the door.  Proceeds benefit The Shepherd’s Staff’s Emergency and Crisis Assistance Programs. In the case of event cancellation due to inclement weather, your ticket payment will be considered a donation.

Diabetes Self-Management Workshops @ South Carroll Senior and Community Center

Join a FREE 2 ½ hour workshop, held weekly for 6 weeks for adults with diabetes, pre-diabetes, or who live with someone that does. Many have learned the self-management approach and lowered their blood sugar, made fewer ER trips, and were less likely to end up in the hospital because of diabetes. These workshops don’t replace your diabetes treatment plan, but instead teaches you the best ways to work with your doctor and family, and helps you set your own goals for managing your diabetes. Sponsored by Carroll County Aging & Disabilities.

McDaniel hosts a visiting artist lecture by sculptor and composer Ben Hall. A native of Detroit, Hall has presented at the Museum of Modern Art and Lincoln Center in New York City, INSTAL in Glasgow, Scotland, and the kunstenentrum BELGIE in Belgium. In addition to creating installations, he is a curator for Baptizum.com, the world’s largest online Black American spiritual collection, and also produces new American improvisational music on his record label brokenresearch, including the last small group recordings of visionary trumpeter and composer Bill Dixon. He received a bachelor’s degree from Bennington College and Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University.

McDaniel’s Global Initiatives hosts a screening of “Here and There” (“Aquí y Allá”). This 2012 drama is about a Mexican immigrant who returns home to a small mountain village in Guerrero, Mexico, after years of working in the United States and struggles to rebuild his family and follow his dreams of starting a band. The Carroll County NAACP will be offering FREE training for its members and the community on Narcan, an opioid antidote drug on March 22nd at 7pm. This training will teach you how to administer Narcan, a medication to treat someone who as suffered from an overdose from heroin or another opioid drug. Each participant will be given Narcan to keep for use after the training. Pre-Registration is required. Deadline to register is March 4th. We ask that you arrive early so that we may begin promptly at 7pm.

This annual event commemorates McDaniel College’s 150th anniversary with readings by McDaniel alumnae poets Karen Uschold Meadows and Melissa Atkinson Mercer. Meadows, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree from McDaniel in 1999, has her first published collection of poems, “Almond, Eyeless,” due out in Feb. 2018. Mercer received a bachelor’s degree from McDaniel in 2010 and is the author of the chapbooks “Storm Was her Voice” and “After the Miracle Season.”
