August 30 – September 28, 2018.  McDaniel College Assistant Professor of Art Chloe Irla, a 2007 alumna of McDaniel, showcases site-specific work created for this exhibition, such as monumental quilts made from hunting and camping textiles, lenticular prints, projected animated GIFs and a window installation.

Irla of Baltimore teaches digital art and design courses at McDaniel and also maintains an interdisciplinary studio practice grounded in both traditional and alternative approaches to painting.  In addition to her bachelor’s degree, she holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Mount Royal School of Art at Maryland Institute College of Art. http://chloe-irla.com/home.html

Rice Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., and Saturday, noon–5 p.m.

French filmmaker Raymond Depardon was given exceptional access to film this documentary that looks at several closed hearings for individuals who have been hospitalized against their will in a psychiatric facility near Lyon. A specialized judge determines whether these patients should continue to be hospitalized. (2017, 87 minutes, not rated.)

Post-screening discussion led by Paul Mazeroff, senior lecturer of psychology.

McDaniel College’s Department of Art and Art History presents this two-day cross-disciplinary biennial conference. Organized by Izabel Galliera, assistant professor of modern art and contemporary art history and theory at McDaniel, the conference includes presentations by invited guest artists and curators. In addition, the opening reception for “Taking Time: An International Video Exhibition on Democracy” in Rice Gallery, Peterson Hall, takes place in conjunction with the conference on October 4.

Richard Sautter, adjunct lecturer in theatre arts at McDaniel, directs the production.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, seniors (over 60), active military members and veterans, as well as those with a McDaniel College ID. Shows are Wednesday, Oct. 3 – Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

He is the senior editor and publisher of “Kairos: A Journal of Rhetoric, Technology, and Pedagogy,” an online journal publishing peer-reviewed scholarship on computers and writing science.

The Ascension Country Breakfast is held on the first Saturday of every month. Come hungry, leave full. Called the best in Carroll County by many of our customers, a full all-you-can-eat breakfast menu including pancakes, Hahn sausage, scrambled eggs, hashed brown potatoes, egg and ham casserole, sausage gravy and biscuits, creamed chipped beef, assorted fruit, assorted pastries, fresh brewed coffee, hot tea, hot chocolate, milk, and juices all at an affordable price. Plenty of parking in the lot behind the church off Ralph St.

The breakfast crew is always looking for more volunteers. If you would like to be involved with this monthly event that benefits the church financially, please contact the church office.

The Fretless, Canada’s fiddling foursome, have steadily racked up Canadian music awards since their debut in 2012, including a JunoTM Award (Canadian equivalent of the Grammys) for Instrumental Album of the Year for 2017’s release “Bird’s Nest.” They are joined by Newfoundland singer Matthew Byrne, whose 2nd album won Traditional Recording of the Year at the 2015 Canadian Folk Music Awards, establishing Byrne as one of Canada’s most authentic and vital traditional voices.

A Culinary Experience has been an annual fundraiser for Rape Crisis Intervention Service of Carroll County since 2000. During this relaxed, informal, tasting event, patrons are treated to samples from a variety of local, Carroll County restaurants, caterers and bakeries. The event also features entertainment by Raptor Productions, silent auction, balloon and basket raffles.  Tickets are $‎75/ticket or $700/table of 10.

Greg Merril, a 1987 alumnus of McDaniel College who has launched Adaptive Phage Therapeutics, speaks during SmartTALK, which brings notable alumni back to campus for an hour-long, on-stage conversation with McDaniel President Roger N. Casey on their subject of expertise. Merril’s Adaptive Phage Therapeutics develops therapies to fight superbugs with bacteria-killing viruses. The event is free and open to the public.

The Westminster Oyster Stroll Festival is far more than oysters, music, food, and fun for the community. It is an event designed to raise awareness about the importance of oyster aquaculture in the Chesapeake Bay. Attendees will have a chance to meet oyster farmers, and taste the varying flavors of oysters from throughout the region. The event directly supports CCA Maryland’s Living Reef Action Campaign.

The annual Sykesville Harvest Festival is a community event that draws thousands of visitors to the Sykesville community each year. Currently, the Harvest Festival hosts 50+ craft and food vendors, live entertainment, and a FREE kids zone for families to enjoy. The festival represents an opportunity for local businesses to highlight their presence within the community and features the best of our Farmers’ Market and 25+ extra vendors and kids’ activities, and the participation of the Fire Department, the Police Department, the Public Works department (with vehicles), and the Town of Sykesville.
